All female group from Liverpool who were first formed in 1961 and continue to perform today. Originally formed as a 16 girl choir sponsored by Vernons, a Liverpool Football Pools company. They experienced regular line-up changes throughout their career and had their greatest success as a smaller group of 3-5 members.
[edit] Beatles connections
- The Vernons Girls single "You know what I mean" inspired John Lennon to replace a line written by Paul McCartney in I Saw Her Standing There.
- They toured as a support act for the Beatles on their 1963 Autumn tour which comprised 34 dates from November 1st to December 13th.
- They appeared on Merseyside special edition of Thank Your Lucky Stars with the Beatles, Cilla Black, The Searchers, Billy J, Kramer and Gerry And The Pacemakers.
- They recorded a single called We Love the Beatles in America as The Carefrees.
- Vernons Girl Lyn Cornell married session drummer Andy White.
