[edit] Writing

Paul McCartney wrote Carry That Weight both about the business problems The Beatles were having with Allen Klein, but also about how they were struggling to stay together as a group. Paul commented, "I'm generally quite upbeat but at certain times things get to me so much that I just can't be upbeat any more and that was one of the times. We were taking so much acid and doing so much drugs and all this Klein shit was going on and getting crazier and crazier and crazier. Carry that weight a long time: like for ever! That's what I meant." The song included vocals from all four Beatles, which was unusual.

[edit] Recording

Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight were recorded as one song, and split into two for the album. Paul, George, and Ringo first recorded the song without John Lennon as he was recovering from a car crash he had gotten into in Golspie, Scotland. On July 2, 1969, fifteen takes were recorded of the basic track for Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight. This basic track included George on bass, Ringo on drums, and Paul on piano and singing guide vocals. The best takes were 13 and 15, which were edited together the next day. Also on July 3 and again on July 4, Paul added lead vocals and rhythm guitar. George then added a lead guitar part and all three sang the chorus. On July 30 and July 31, more vocals were recorded for the chorus, this time including John. Also on July 31, they added timpani and drums. The orchestra was recorded on August 15.
