We also probably need more sections in this article ... we need to talk about the duration, the meaning of the song for John, etc ...

Written by Ager/Yellen

[edit] Background history

"Ain't She Sweet" was composed by Milton Ager & Jack Yellen in 1927. It became a song that was extraordinarily popular in the first half of the twentieth century, one of the smash hit songs that typified the Roaring Twenties. Like "Happy Days Are Here Again" (1929), it became a Tin Pan Alley standard. Both Ager and Yellen were elected to membership in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.

Milton Ager wrote "Ain't She Sweet" for his daughter Shana Ager, who later grew up and became Shana Alexander, who was on television and on radio as a political commentator. Gene Vincent recorded a rock'n'roll version in 1956. It is part of The Beatles repertoire since 1957.

This one's of John's early favourites. It is said that John would often run through this song between song takes. Even after The Beatles-era, John was keen to play this tune whenever he could (see John Lennon Anthology Boxset).

But the song was also properly recorded during the sessions for the first Beatles-single (My Bonnie/The Saints, released on Polydor NH66833).

[edit] Availability

For now, only three versions have shown up. Two are issued from the Polydor sessions and one was recorded as a jam during the Abbey Road sessions Another version, although many would not consider this The Beatles does exist. It is of Paul, George, and Ringo playing the song around the time of the Anthology. A video of this appears on the Anthology DVD special features and has Paul singing, George on ukelele and Ringo tapping his knees, clapping, and making other percussive sounds. Since it's release on DVD, the audio portion has been included on some bootlegs.

[edit] Recording

[edit] Polydor Sessions

Basic informations comes from The 1985 Polydor CD booklet On June 22 and 23, 1961 The Beatles were hired by producer Bert Kaempfert, to record several songs with Tony Sheridan.Stuart Sutcliffe did not participate in the sessions. Ain't She Sweet is one of the two songs that were recorded during those sessions that did not involve Tony Sheridan. The other one being Cry For A Shadow.

See Polydor Sessions for additional details.

An overdubbed version of the song was released as a single on July 6, 1964 (with Nobody's Child as Side B) in the US by Atlantic Records. The version was the same as the original except that it has overdubbed drums (possibly by Bernard Purdie). The same version was released on the Atlantic LP Ain't She Sweet.

[edit] Abbey Road Sessions

Ain't She Sweet was played during the Sun King/Mean Mr Mustard session. It was part of a Gene Vincent jam medley including also Be-Bop-A-Lula and Who Slapped John ?. Only Ain't She Sweet has surfaced for now thanks to the Anthology.

[edit] Chronological list of all available versions
